Chikkanna Government Arts College

The Chikkanna Government Arts College is located in the city of Tirupur, which lies in the state pf Tamil Nadu. It was established in the year 1966, and presently has a campus covering forty acres of land. It is affiliated to the Bharathiar University, based in Coimbatore, also in Tamil Nadu. The college has to abide by the rules set by the DCE (Directorate of Collegiate Education), based in Chennai, the state capital. The Chikkanna Government Arts College has been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council) with a B grade rating. A separate AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report) has been created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with. The college is also a signatory to the TNGCTA (Tamil Nadu Government Collegiate Teachers’ Association). This allows frequent teacher training sessions for its own faculty, as well as the use of college infra for state level events. 

Courses are available at the Chikkanna Government Arts College all the way from the UG till doctoral levels. Even though, as the name suggests, the original mandate of the college was entwined with the arts, but then the college went on to incorporate programmes from the sciences and commerce fields as well. Right now, at the undergrad level, the BA programmes are available for Tamil, English and History. The B. Com may be pursued with three separate specializations. These are in the areas of- International Business (IB), Computer Applications and for Accounting & Banking. The related BBA programme is also here on offer. So is the BCA. BSc. is available for the areas of- Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Mathematics, Computer Science and in Costume Design & Fashion. Courses may be available in either Tamil or English medium modes. Options also exist for the morning shift for classes, and the evening shift, though these options depend on demand. 

At the master’s level, an MA may be pursued in English. The M. Com can be undertaken for the general one and with IB specialization. There are wider options for an MSc. here as the usual fields of Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Mathematics and from Computer Science may be chosen from here. M. Phil and doctoral programmes may also be undertaken over here. Admissions to all the programmes at each level is on the basis of merit and centrally or state- wise recognized entrance examinations. The entire academics at the Chikkanna Government Arts College in Tamil Nadu is run by a cohort of departments, each with expertise in its own area. Each of the major subject areas has its own department. 

Research is another major area for the Chikkanna Government Arts College based in Tamil Nadu. The college has taken up several projects and consulting assignments from government bodies as well as private organizations. Some of the leading organizations worked with include the UGC (University Grants Commission), DST (Department of Science and Technology), ICSSR (Indian Council of Social Science Research), TANSCHE (Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education), DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization), SSPL (Solid State Physics Laboratory) and the TNSCST (Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology). The college has also received several awards for its focus on research and academics.
