The College of Engineering, Trivandrum was established in 1939 as the first Engineering College in the then Travancore State. The first classes were started on 3rd July 1939 during the reign of the Travancore King, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma and as the head of the then Travancore state he deserves his share of credit in the establishment of the college. Initially the College was housed in the former office and bungalow of the Chief Engineer (present PMG Office). Maj T.H. Mathewman, a Britisher was the first Principal. Started as a constituent College of Travancore University, the College had an initial intake of 21 students each for Degree and Diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches. With the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late fifties, the College administration came under the control of the Government of Kerala. The College was shifted to the present sprawling 125 acres in 1960.

CET infrastructure is well-equipped to offer a plethora of facilities like - a central computing facility, a fully furnished lab room- the Sree Chithirathirunal Centre for Computing which accommodates ultra-modern ICT devices and technologies and has 96 top-notch desktop PCs and accessories, a dedicated Centre for Training in Software Engineering (CTSE) harbouring 48 computers, technical libraries, hostel, research programmes and so on. The civil engineering labs, particularly the material testing lab, has been maintained quite well and consists of state-of-the-art equipment apart from the finest-quality machinery.
Boys Hostel The college has both, a men's hostel with 250 rooms to accommodate 500 students and a women's hostel with 140 rooms for 400 students. Both hostels consist of Indoor and outdoor facilities for sports and cultural activities such as reading rooms and fitness centres with up to date equipment.
Girls Hostel The college has both, a men's hostel with 250 rooms to accommodate 500 students and a women's hostel with 140 rooms for 400 students. Both hostels consist of Indoor and outdoor facilities for sports and cultural activities such as reading rooms and fitness centres with up to date equipment.
Library The technical library is host to a massive collection of books, periodicals, reports, and digital journals among others. Open from 9 am to 8 pm on weekdays, it also offers lending and document delivery services apart from a combination of back volume and current periodical sections.
Sports CET has a lot of indoor and outdoor sports-related facilities which allow students to play and relax during their leisure time and also to keep themselves fit.
Auditorium The college also has an auditorium facility that can be used for important events.
