Government College Mananthavady had been a long cherished dream of the marginalised people of the hill area of Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad District. The college started functioning with Pre-degree III and IV Groups with 80 students in each, in a temporary shed attached to Thonichal Church on 1st September 1981. The College was affiliated to University of Calicut (Now is affiliated to Kannur University).
Sri E. K. Nayanar, the then Chief Minister of Kerala inagurated the college on 4th October 1981, at a function presided over by Sri Baby John, the Minister for Education. In 1983, the college was shifted to the newely constructed building with 8 rooms by the sponsoring committee. Another building with 5 rooms was also constructed under N.R.E.P. Scheme.
The college was upgraded by starting B. Com. degree course in 1991-92. B. A. English was started in 1993-94, B. A. Dev. Economics in 1998-99 and B. Sc. Electronics in 1999-2000.Sri P. J. Joseph, the then Minister for Education of Kerala inagurates the new permanent college building on 27th February 1999, and the college was shifted to the permanent building. PG Programme in Commerce is started functioning in 2012-13.
This college is located in a hillock near Payode in Edavaka Panchayat, Mananthavady Taluk, Wayanad District, just 3½ kms. North East from Mananthavady Kalpetta highway.Now the college with four degree courses stands as an oasis of learning for the hundreds of students who come out with thing colours from Higher Secondary Schools around the vast area of Mananthavady Taluk. This young institution has ample scope for great expansion and development which is expected in due course.
A person, who has passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) Plus Two or equivalent program any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible for the course.
Sports The college has sports facilities for all students.
Cafeteria The college has a canteen facility for staff and students.
Auditorium The college has an auditorium facility for events and seminars.
Medical/Hospital The college has a health center with a first aid facility for the students.
Wifi The college has a fully Wi-fi enabled campus for uninterrupted flow of information to integrate the education process and develop new mindsets. The Departments, hostels are connected to the campus via the campus-wide wi-fi network which enables the residents to browse the internet and access the online library resources for their academic and research-related work.
IT Infrastructure The computer center is a fully air-conditioned facility. It enables students to remain updated and to sharpen their skills in computing and related areas, so indispensable in today’s world. Students may make full use of this facility to hone their skills at handling computers. The fully air-conditioned centralized computing facility is created with the aid and assistance of UGC and Govt of Kerala. Besides C Lab there is a fully air-conditioned UGC Network Resource Centre (17 computers with 16 Mbps internet connectivity There is a dedicated network of an advanced computer system, on which free internet is available to all users.
Classrooms The institution has 13 spacious, well-ventilated classrooms (Smart class rooms) with blackboards, whiteboards, interactive boards, LCD projector, podiums, and an adequate seating facility for learners. Smart Classroom is a comprehensive strategy for digital education in GCM. Smart Classrooms enable students and faculties to make use of every available resource from one point at the click of a button. It enables the faculty to innovatively impart knowledge. It also acts like an electronic board where everything written on it can be saved as a file for future reference.
Laboratories The College has well-equipped Electronics and Physics Labs to cater to the needs of B.Sc. Electronics Sciences course that the College offers. The College is aware that with changing times and courses, these labs need to be continuously upgraded and updated. The lab is equipped with 15 workstations, each consisting of a function generator, oscilloscope, triple power supply and digital multi-meters. The lab is primarily used by students to do their projects and undergraduate electronics-based experiments.
