Henry Baker College, Melukavu is a Christian, Minority, Co-educational, Government Aided Arts and Science College established in 1981. The college is named after Rev. Henry Baker (Jr), the pioneering CMS missionary, often known as the Apostle of the Hills, who led the people of this locality from darkness to light. It is owned, managed and run by the Henry Baker Educational Society of the C.S.I East Kerala Diocese and is instituted to impart quality education primarily to the marginalized and the voiceless sections. It is recognized as a Minority Educational Institution by the National Minority Commission, Government of India under Article 30 of the Constitution of India.
The college was founded in 1981 by the C.S.I Madhya Kerala Diocese providing two year Pre-Degree Courses of Kerala University. Later on, the College was permanently affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University in 1983, upgraded in 1991 and became a first grade college in 1999. It enjoys the 2(F) and 12(B) status of the UGC Act and houses both Government-aided and self-financing courses. Special consideration is given to the students of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes , to prepare them light a beacon of humaneness in this turbulent age. It has moulded the destiny of hundreds of people for a better morrow and has emerged as a leading centre for teaching, learning, and research in the field of higher education.
The Memorandum of understanding between Henry Baker College, Melukavu and Albert Schweitzer School, Germany, for mutual partnership and cooperation in the field of education, was signed on 6th September 2013. The period of validity of the MOU has been for 5 years of the first phase and will be extended further based on the evaluation of its performance in the previous years.
Any candidate who passed the Plus Two of the Kerala Higher Secondary Examination Board or prescribed qualification of any Examination Board of any State, recognized as equivalent to the Plus Two of the Kerala Higher Secondary Examination Board with not less than 40% marks in aggregate is eligible for admission. However, SC/ST, OBC, and other eligible communities shall be given reservation as per the Rules of Kerala Higher Education Council and Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
Girls Hostel The college Residence Hall-Amelia is an integral part of the college since its inception in 1981. It is well-equipped for the women students and staff of Henry Baker College. It is located outside the campus next to St. Luke’s CSI Church, Caleyland. It got renamed Amelia in 2020 after the beloved mother of Rev. Henry Baker Jr, who is well known for her heroic and selfless work in uplifting women. Hostels are also equipped with TV, Computer and Wi-Fi facility, News Paper and indoor games like Table Tennis, Chess, Caroms, etc. The rooms can be offered on the twin or three sharing bases, as per the preference of the students. Well equipped washrooms are there to ensure cleanliness. They are well maintained on a daily basis by dedicated housekeeping staff. The hostel is protected by highrise walls, CCTV and is under the watch of security 24x7.
Gym The college has A well-managed gymnasium is available within campus for students as well as faculty. Physical activity is good for our mental health. Experts believe that exercise releases chemicals in our brain that make us feel good. Regular exercise can also boost our self-esteem and help us concentrate, sleep, look and feel better. Library The college has a library that is the reservoir of energy that fuels our imagination. As new vistas of knowledge open up in all fields of education, access to it becomes mandatory for self-improvement. The library started functioning since the inception of the college and it is the key resource of information for the academic community. The Library has a collection of over 15500 volumes and subscribes to prestigious journals and periodicals around the globe. Library enhances reading habits in students by creating a learning space that is computerized by establishing an Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), an Internet browsing area, and a laptop zone with a Wi-Fi facility.
Sports The college has Sports help to develop the overall personality of the students by shaping physical, mental, and social well-being. Sports have been viewed as a way to stay healthy and in shape, moreover, sports teaches life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability, and teamwork. The students actively involved in the following sports and games. Badminton, Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Table tennis, Chess, Carroms, Wrestling, Powerlifting, and Weightlifting.
Cafeteria The college has a canteen catering to the needs of the HBC community. It can accommodate 70 people at a time. The canteen has a hygienic broad dining room with comfortable and modern furniture and a kitchen with moderately modern, carbon-free cookware and serves delicious food to the community at a subsidized rate. There are separate seating arrangements for staff and students inside the dining hall. The canteen service is provided by the college through a private contract with a canteen service provider in the nearby locality of the college. The canteen serves breakfast, lunch, eatables, and confectioneries along with coffee, tea, cool drinks, ice-creams, sweets, etc. It has a cashier, a waiter, and a cook.
Auditorium The College has a main auditorium equipped with an audio-visual facility meant for common programs. It can accommodate 300 persons at a time. The Auditorium is the venue for diverse academic and cultural events. It caters to academic activities like seminars, workshops, exhibitions, debates, presentations, and lectures. The institution utilizes it for multifarious programs like Farewell Functions, Cultural functions, College Day, Arts Day, Onam Celebrations, Christmas Carol Services, and several other common programs.
Wifi College Wi-Fi is designed using optical fiber technology to offer ultra-high-speed open and secured Wi-Fi networks with a range that covers the whole campus area. It also serves to provide online services with regard to student attendance, administration, examination, library, e-resources, and e-journals. Apart from free internet connectivity enabled through the Campus Wi-Fi Facility, a LAN network infrastructure has been provided to offer secure and scalable internet connectivity for the faculties, staff, and computer labs with Ethernet speed. These networks allow multiple users to get even internet access – all the users share an equal amount of bandwidth and internet speed.
