Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay was established in 1958 in Powai, Mumbai (earlier known as Bombay) as the second IIT in all of India with external financial assistance. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is commonly known as IIT Bombay. The institute is recognised as the 'Institute of Eminence ' by the University Grants Commission. The campus of IIT Bombay covers an area of 550 acres and it has a total of 678 faculty members.
As per NIRF Rankings 2021, IIT Bombay has been ranked 10th in the management category with an overall score of 68.08 whereas, in 2020, the institute was ranked 11th in the same category. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has secured 3rd rank in the engineering, overall and research category in NIRF Rankings 2021. The institute has collaboration with numerous overseas universities/institutions to provide global exposure to students. The institute is located in the Powai region of Mumbai (Bombay). The campus is connected to the city of Mumbai via buses, trains and flights. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is approximately 10 km away from IIT Bombay. The domestic airport is approximately 15 km away from the main campus. Kanjur Marg, Vikhroli, or Ghatkopar are the nearest stations to IIT Bombay for students coming by Central Railway. If coming by the Western Railway, Andheri, Bandra, Goregaon or Malad are the nearest stations. The campus is also well connected through local trains. Students can take taxis, auto-rickshaws, BEST buses or local trains to reach the campus.

VR Convocation - IIT Bombay holds the 58th convocation in Virtual Reality Mode owing to the safety measures necessary to be carried out for the ongoing pandemic.
Boys Hostel The college has boys hostels for accommodation of students. The hostels have well-furnished rooms to offer a comfortable stay to students. Each hostel has a mess that serves delicious food to students.
Girls Hostel The hostels of IIT Bombay make sure home-like environment is offered to students. The hostel rooms are furnished and ventilated. For the safety for girls, 24*7 surveillance is provided at hostels. All basic facilities are available at girl hostels.
Gym A modern gym is located within college premises. It allows students to workout and maintain good physical health. The gym is modern and upgraded.
Library The central library of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is the knowledge hub for students. The library has books, thesis, publications, journals and various other reading materials. Study rooms, photocopy machine etc. are also present within the library. Digital resources such as CD, DVDs, plagiarism detection software etc. are also there in the library for students.
Sports IIT Bombay has a sports complex that has facilities for sports such as athletics, aquatics, basketball, cricket football, hockey etc. The Sports Council of the institute plans and coordinate every event and tournament both at the inter as well as intra level. “Cyclothon” is planned and organized with Fit India Movement for cycle enthusiasts in and around IIT Bombay.
Cafeteria IIT hosts some interesting options for eating out. Gulmohar Restaurant offers a variety of vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food. The restaurant provides a relatively more formal setting for meals within the campus
Medical/Hospital The campus has a hospital that offers general as well as specialised healthcare services to students, staff and faculty members.
Guest Room The guest house in IIT Bombay consists of two vihars namely Jalvihar and Vanvihar and faculty apartments and guest services. The vihars have facilities such as double bedrooms, computer kiosk and seminar halls which are neatly furnished air-conditioned and equipped with very good facilities. Faculty members can avail fully furnished one or two-bedroom apartments with all facilities such as Wifi, LAN connectivity, laundry, and guest services.
