Set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Department, Government of India, in the year 2008, the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar (or IIT Ropar) is one of the eight new IITs set up to expand the reach of quality technical education in the country. In NIRF Rankings 2021, the college secured in 19th and 49th ranks in engineering and research categories. The college is recognised as an 'Institute of National Importance' by the Government of India. The campus of the institute covers an area of 500 acres and it has a total of 158 faculty members.
The college offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in various specialisations along with five-year integrated dual degrees. The institute offers a total of 46 courses. IIT Ropar also has a strong collaboration with national and international institutions, namely Aston University UK, Imperial College of London, Simon Fraser University of Canada, and the University of Glasgow Scotland in the UK. The various collaborations enable the institute to invite experts from the industry, academia, and clinical community to organise numerous talks and symposiums. The campus of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has a large number of facilities for students.
The college is situated at Ropar (also known as Rupnagar) in Punjab. The nearest bus station is Rupnagar Old Bus Stand in Chotta Khera, about 8 kilometres from the campus. The nearest railway station is Rupnagar Railway station, located at about 2kms from the institute. Candidates can also fly in at Chandigarh airport situated about 60 kilometres away and take the National Highway NH-21 to the IIT Ropar campus. Ropar town has a robust railway and road connectivity for students to arrive at the IIT Ropar campus.
Candidates must have secured at least 75% aggregate in Class XII (or equivalent) Board examination. (65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates) Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are compulsory subjects in the Board examination.
Boys Hostel Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has three boys hostels - Mercury, Jupiter and Neptune. Each hostel has basic facilities like RO systems, common room for games and recreation, comfortable beds, and water coolers. The rooms are well-furnished and offer a comfortable stay to students.
Girls Hostel The college has one girl hostel - Venus Girls Hostel. For the convenience of students, the girl hostel has basic facilities like RO water purifier, water coolers, common room etc. The hostel is managed by the warden.
Gym The campus of Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has a modern gym. The gym is equipped with the latest equipment. It also students in achieving their physical goals.
Library The library at IIT Ropar serves as the main information centre for research and training affairs at the Institute. It has a large number of books, journals, thesis etc. IIT Ropar’s library also has an e-resource section to browse DVDs and CDs of dissertations, thesis, and books.
Sports IIT Ropar provides excellent sports facilities on the campus for students interested in such games and events. There are separate grounds for different sports including football, cricket, basketball, badminton, tennis, and other athletics.

Transport Indian Institute of Technology Ropar has a paid bus facility used for daily transportation by staff and faculty members who live off-campus. It runs between Chandigarh, Mohali and IIT Ropar campus.
Guest Room IIT Ropar facilities also include a guest house with five well-furnished rooms. Each room has two beds, AC, one LCD TV and some basic furniture. Two rooms are situated in the main building with reception, and the other three are in another building.
