The institute had the enviable reputation among all educational institutions since it had Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the renowned technocrat and former President of India as its very first Chancellor. Prof U.R.Rao, the eminent space scientist and one of the former Chairman, ISRO guided the institute as its second Chancellor with distinction for two years from 2015 to 2017. Dr B.N. Suresh, the founder Director of IIST has assumed charge as the institute’s third Chancellor since November 2017. 
                             Under the guidance of Dr. K Radhakrishnan and Shri A. S. Kiran Kumar (former Secretaries DoS / Chairman ISRO) as Chairman, Board of Management, IIST and Chairman, Governing Council, IIST, respectively, the previous Director, Dr. K. S. Dasgupta led the institute to achieve its mission of creating a unique learning environment enriched by the challenges of the Space exploration, by nurturing the spirit of innovation and creativity. IIST was judged as the eighth ranked University among all Deemed Universities in 2016 in the first National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by MHRD. Dr K Sivan has assumed charge as Secretary, DoS in January 2018 and IIST is looking forward to Dr Sivan and the present Director Dr V.K. Dadhwal to take the institute to the next higher level of excellence. In the year 2017, IIST was ranked 28th among all engineering institutes, 35th among all universities and 56th overall among all institutions by MHRD in its second NIRF ranking.

Qualifying Examination

Candidates should have passed their Qualifying Examination (10+2 or Equivalent), with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM).
Candidates must have secured at least 70% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) in the qualifying examination. Those belonging to SC/ST/PD category should require an aggregate of at least 60% marks in the qualifying examination

  • Facilities
    Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram is an institution dedicated to space science and technology needs. The academic environment for students should facilitate the other requirements that will aid students in terms of fitness, health, communication, and research. Keeping the needs of students, IIST Thiruvananthapuram facilities and infrastructure are planned in a way that students from diverse backgrounds find campus life comfortable. The IIST facilities are not only restricted to hostel, canteen, and IT labs, there are extracurricular activities, a huge library, and other amenities to provide a thriving environment for students.
  • Boys Hostel
    There are 11 hostels, where boys and girls are given separate accommodation, with 8 hostels for boys and 3 hostels for girls. The hostels have accommodations for approximately 800 students, including modern exercise facilities, lecture rooms, national and local newspapers, clean drinking water, satellite-style LCD TV power supply with backup. 
  • Girls Hostel
    There are 11 hostels, where boys and girls are given separate accommodation, with 8 hostels for boys and 3 hostels for girls. The hostels have accommodations for approximately 800 students, including modern exercise facilities, lecture rooms, national and local newspapers, clean drinking water, satellite-style LCD TV power supply with backup. 
  • Library
    The library has a six-story building that has a huge collection of books, journals, and resources along with supplementary reading materials and reference materials. It uses OPAC (Online public access catalog) on a 24 X 7 basis. 
  • Sports
    This facility helps to train and empower students in various sports and fitness activities with a planned set of intramural competitions and various sports events. The Fitness Centre has a multi-station gym system, machines, and weight machines for use by students and faculty.
  • Cafeteria
    The IIST consists of four dining areas, namely Aditi, Akshaya, Tripathi, Subhiksha which houses over 150 people and offers students and faculty hygienic and quality food. There are cafes inside the Aerospace building campus, in the physical science building, and in the gate complex, where snacks and meals are sold.
  • Medical/Hospital
    Thiruvananthapuram medical unit within IIST is equipped with trained physicians and nursing staff to provide students and faculty with any form of medical care. Doctors will be accessed by students and faculty with nursing staff will be available 24x7 for emergencies. There is also an emergency ambulance available for students 24x7.
  • IT Infrastructure
    IIST has the infrastructure for computing, information systems, and networking facilities to fulfill all academic needs of students as well as the academic empowerment of the faculty. The computers are well configured and functional in many academic departments with well-enabled workstations and software packages. 
  • Transport
     The transport service is fully functional with a fleet of services for students, faculty members, and staff.
  • Laboratories
    The University has a departmental-based laboratories facility for the students.
  • Convenience Store
    There is a stationery shop inside the premises where one can purchase necessary items and toiletries. The book shop is a private run for students to book their stationary and procure it in advance.

    Union Bank of India has a dedicated branch on campus for all required banking and financial transactions along with an ATM facility.
