Established in 1937, the University of Kerala was formerly known as the University of Travancore and is one of the first 16 universities of India. Kerala University was founded by the promulgation of the Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama who was also the first chancellor of the University. There are 167 colleges that are affiliated to the University of Kerala. Kerala University is ranked 23rd in the university category for 2020 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), MHRD and the NIRF ranking for the year 2021 in the university category is 27. The university is also ranked at 43rd position in the overall category by NIRF ranking 2021. The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of “A”.

Boys Hostel The University of Kerala offers hostel accommodation to both boys and girls. In total, there are 6 hostels out of which two are for men (PG students). Also, the university provides an International Youth Hostel to cater to the temporary residential needs of the students and faculty.
Girls Hostel In total, the university has six hostels for boys and girls out of which four are for girls. These six hostels are functioning under the University of Kerala at Kariavattom campus and at Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram.
Library Kerala University library has a large number of books in many genres. These include course-specific books, fiction, nonfiction, books by international authors and many more.
Sports The university has a playground and a sports stadium for outdoor sports. Students can play football, cricket, and hockey. Also, students interested in sports like gymnastics can avail the facilities in the department of physical education.
Cafeteria Healthy and delicious meals are provided to the students and staff of the university by the canteen.
Auditorium Various university events take place throughout the year and most of them are being organised in the university auditorium.
