The institute is affiliated to the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU), and was the first engineering college to be established by the Government of Kerala under the aegis of the institute of Human Resource Development (IHRD). The college was previously affiliated to Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and has witnessed record breaking placements year after year. MEC was featured 37 among the top 100 engineering colleges in India by Outlook magazine and 21 among the top 25 Govt. Engineering colleges in India by DataQuest.

Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination, Kerala, or Examinations recognized as equivalent thereto, with 50 % marks in Mathematics separately and 50 % marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry / Biotechnology / Computer Science / Biology taken together are eligible for admission.

The college has a boy’s hostel facility which provides good hostel accommodation for the students.

Library
The library has acquired a good collection of books and journals in the area of Electronics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, and related subjects like Science, Mathematics, and Management. The Library has approximately 27014 volumes of books and 60 journals. Books are classified according to the Dewey Decimal classification scheme and are cataloged according to Anglo American Cataloguing rules II, with local variation. The library provides information services such as current awareness service, selective dissemination of information service, reference service, bibliographic service, etc. An amount of Rs50 lakhs has been sanctioned for the modernization of the library under the TEQIP Project.

Govt. Model Engineering College has an excellent physical education department under the guidance of Mr. Johnson Phillip. The sports club of Model Engineering College is engaged in the training of the college team for various inter-collegiate events. The sports club conducts various sports and games events every year in the college. The intra-college leagues for games like football, basketball, volleyball, throw ball, chess, cricket, and annual sports meet are the main events.
