Madras Institute of Technology was established in 1949 by Shri. C. Rajam. The college was merged with Anna University in 1978. MIT Chennai is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). Madras Institute of Technology also has NIRF ranking. The college is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is affiliated to Anna University. The mission of the college is to promote quality education with the vision of nurturing professionals for the welfare of society.

The institute offers courses in the fields of science, engineering and technology. The college offers courses in the following streams: B.E, B.Tech, M.E, M.Tech, M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D.

The courses are approved by AICTE. The admissions to the courses is as per the Madras Institute of Technology criterion. The college has a total 117 well-qualified faculty members. The total number of students enrolled at present is 3968. Thus, the student-teacher ratio at the college is 34:1. Madras Institute of Technology also has many national and international collaborations like Bristol University, Portsmouth University, National Institute of Material Science, Hiroshima University, Tamilnadu Police, Government of Tamilnadu, etc.

The campus of the college is spread over an area of 51 acres of land. Ample facilities are provided by the college. Some of them are boys hostel, girls hostel, library, sports, IT infrastructure, auditorium, medical clinic, cooperative store, museum, laboratories, etc. Madras Institute of Technology has a placement cell, which helps in the placement of the final year students. The cell coordinates with the Center for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC) for MIT Chennai placement. The college provides many scholarships to meritorious and deserving candidates. The college also has many clubs and cells.

The college is located at MIT Road, Radha Nagar, Chromepet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. There are various modes of transport to reach the college. One can travel by air, road or rail to reach Madras Institute of Technology. The nearest railway station to MIT Chennai is Chrompet Railway Station. The distance between the railway station and the college is 1.2 km. It will take around 5 minutes from the railway station to reach the college. The nearest bus stop is Chrompet Bus Stop. It is located at a distance of 1.2 km. One can easily reach the college in 5 minutes from the bus stop. Chennai International Airport is the nearest airport to the Madras Institute of Technology. It is 5.5 km far and would take approximately 11 minutes from cab or auto.

Facilities

  • Boys Hostel
    Madras Institute of Technology hostel facilities provide an environment conducive to academic learning. The college hostels are very comfortable for the accommodation of outstation students. The hostel rooms are well-furnished and well-ventilated. Mess facility is also available. The hostels are enabled with wi-fi.
  • Girls Hostel
    MIT Chennai girls hostel facilities include all basic amenities like water, electricity, furniture, appliances, mess, wi-fi, etc. The hostels provide a safe and comfortable stay and help to excel in academics.
  • Library
    The college library is very spacious and has a separate reading room. MIT Chennai library is well-stocked with numerous books on engineering and basic sciences. A large volume of periodicals, national and international journals, DVDs, VCDs,  newspapers, magazines are also available in the library. The library also provides special services like founder’s family book bank, book bank for SC/ST students, information retrieval systems through intranet, reprography services, inter library loan, etc. The library is enabled with wi-fi and students can access e-books, other e-learning materials and online journals easily. Some of the online resources are IEEE, Scopus, SAE international journals, science direct, etc. The library is fully automated with OPAC and RFID system for carrying out daily administrative work. Honorary librarians monitor the functioning of the library.
  • Sports
    The college sports facility covers a large area, located at the main campus as well as at Rani Thottam, 1 km away from the main campus. Madras Institute of Technology sports facilities include a 400 metres track, football and hockey fields, badminton, tennis, kabaddi, kho-kho courts, cricket oval, a mini stadium and a 6 feet pathway for walking. There is also an artificial mountain climbing facility.
  • Auditorium
    The college auditorium is very spacious and is used for organising events and seminars. The auditorium also has an open-air theatre, equipped with audio and video systems.
  • Medical/Hospital
    Madras Institute of Technology medical clinic facilities provide basic first-aid to emergency treatment.
  • IT Infrastructure
    The IT infrastructure of Madras Institute of Technology is well-maintained. The computer centre provides computational, technological and internet facilities. With the help of the centre, students, researchers and faculty members can upgrade their skills at various Windows and LINUX platforms.
