On February 10, 1921, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKVP) was established as Kashi Vidyapith and laid the foundation stone by Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta and Bhagwan Das. It is one of the largest public state universities in Uttar Pradesh, with hundreds of thousands of students, both rural and urban. It offers a range of professional and academic courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Computing, and Management. The university was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on September 23, 2010, under Act, 1956 and was accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade - (CGPA Score 2.41 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) in September 15, 2012. The Vidyapith was accorded the status of "Deemed University" by the UGC in 1963 and owes its birth to the educational, cultural and political aspirations of pre-independence India. The university has more than 400+ affiliated colleges spread over six districts. UG courses are under Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS). Therefore, the students should have to choose one honor (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.

A candidate shall have passed Higher Secondary School/ Intermediate (10+2) or its equivalent certificate from a recognized Board in respective discipline of admission.
Boys Hostel The University has a boy’s hostel facility which provides good hostel accommodation for the students.

Library The University's central library of the university is situated in the middle of the university campus and the total area in the library of both floors is 2250sq. meter. At present, it has a total collection of 2,34,701 documents. It also contains a section of unpublished theses. The collected information material has been organized discipline-wise in multistoried stacks. Organization of Collections: Books are basically organized by the 19th edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme on the iron racks on the ground floor of the library. Textbooks: The user community of the academic library constitutes mostly the students, teachers, and research scholars. The academic courses require various sets of prescribed textbooks, therefore the library maintains a separate collection of books, so a large number of students may use and share their requisite information. Reference Books: The library has a good collection of reference tools, such as encyclopedias, handbooks, directories, yearbooks, which are secondary or derived sources of information. These collections are continuously updated with tools & supplements to old ones, in order to give only the latest on the subject.
