The Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, one of the oldest Syrian Christian Churches founded by St. Thomas in India, entered the realm of higher education by establishing a College in Tiruvalla, the Headquarters of the Church. The Church, which had pioneered many social and humanitarian projects, was thus responding to a dire need of the society in the field of higher education by founding Mar Thoma College in 1952. The college grew fast, even beyond the dreams of founding fathers and now it is one of the most reputed Colleges in the state and is a glowing example of the vision of the Church and its commitment to the needs of the society.
The late Most Rev. Dr. Juhanon Mar Thoma Metropolitan, the late Rt. Rev. Dr. Mathews Mar Athanasius, late Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan and the late Mr. K.K Kuruvilla and many others contributed in no small measure to the growth and development of this institution. The present Manager of the College is Most. Rev. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan.
From a small beginning with 250 students and 12 teachers, the college has grown into a premier educational institution with over 1500 students on the rolls, over 80 members on the teaching staff and about 45 members on the non-teaching staff. The college presently offers 12 under graduate and 11 post graduate programmes and several non-formal courses. The College also has seven bonafide research departments offering full time research facility leading to Ph.D.
Orientation Programme – 2022 for First Year Economics Students Shri. Sunil D. Kuruvilla, Career Counsellor and the Founder of Insight Mission, gave the technical session in the Orientation Programme for the First Year BA and MA Economics students, held on Friday, 7th January, 2022.
A person, who has passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto, shall be eligible for the course.
Girls Hostel The College provides residential facilities for nearly 300 women students in two hostels with modern facilities. Application forms and details of admission can be had from the Management Office.
Gym A multi-gym functions under the aegis of the Physical Education Department. Weight training equipment and other fitness gadgets are housed here, can be used by the students.
Library The College library was graded as a 1st-grade library in 1970 by the state government. The library has now in addition to books and journals, a good collection of Microfiche, CDROMs, and Cassettes. A number of news magazines and dailies are also available for browsing. Bound Volumes of THE HINDU Newspaper from 1958 onwards, bound volumes of THE TIME, THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC and other academic journals attract researchers and the general public as well. The Library has also started an Archives Section with a modest collection of archival materials.
Sports The college has sports facilities for all students.
Cafeteria The College Canteen serves light refreshments and lunch to students and staff. Special caterings are also undertaken. All students are advised to get themselves enrolled as members of the Society and help in the realization of its objects to their own obvious advantage as well as the advantage of the fellow students of the college.
Auditorium The college has an auditorium facility for events and seminar.
Medical/Hospital The college has a health centre with a first aid facility for the students.
WiFi The college has a Wi-Fi facility for the students and staff.
IT Infrastructure The College with the aim of imparting first-grade computer education and computer literacy for all. Various courses like PGDCA (both regular and part-time), Computer Fundamentals, Operating Systems, Basic and Cobol Programming, Systems and Analysis Design, Programming, FoxPro, Visual Basic, RDBMS, Oracle, Object-oriented programming in C++, Web designing, etc. are offered by the institute to suit the needs and convenience of both college and other regular students.
Laboratories The college has a departmental based laboratories facility for the students.
Convenience Store The college has a Co-operative Society functioning within the campus. It is operating a store and canteen. The Store deals in a wide range of stationery goods and textbooks. Students can also avail xerox facility at nominal cost from the store.
Guest Room The college has guest house/waiting room facilities for visiting faculty and student family members.
Banks Facilities The Tiruvalla branch of the Indian Bank operates an Extension Counter inside the College Campus on all working days. The banking services on these days are available between 11 a.m and 2 p.m.
