Maulana Azad College, Kolkata was established in 1924 and founded by Lord Lytton, the contemporary Governor of Bengal with the sole motive of promoting Islamic learning and general education among the Muslim population. Maulana Azad College, Kolkata is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The college was formerly known as Islamia College and was later renamed as Central Calcutta College. In 1960, the college was again renamed as Maulana Azad College in memory of the great national leader Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. The college offers a total of 25 courses in the field of Arts, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Commerce. 

The mission of Maulana Azad College is to promote integrated growth, intellectual, moral, and cultural and personal development in all students with special emphasis on students belonging to weaker sections of the society. Maulana Azad College, Kolkata is situated at 8 Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Kolkata, West Bengal. The college is spread over 5 acres of land. Maulana Azad College is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Maulana Azad College offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses; BA Urdu Hons, Bcom Accounting and Finance, BA Persian, BSc Economics Hons, BA Arabic Hons, BA Persian Hons, MA English, MA Urdu respectively. In total, the college offers 22 undergraduate courses and 3 postgraduate programmes.

The nearest airport is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport which is 20 km away from the campus. Students can take a bus from the Dharmatala Bus Stand, which is 5 mins away from the college.

Facilities

  • Boys Hostel
    Baker Government Hostel, located at 8, Smith Lane, Kolkata 700 013, is under the direct administrative control of this college. It provides seats only to Muslim students who do not have a residence in and around Kolkata. Rules and regulations of the hostels are governed by the wardens. Also, mess facilities are provided to the students that serve delicious and quality meals at a nominal cost. 
  • Gym
    Two gymnasiums are situated each in the boys' and girls' common room, both are furnished with modern fitness equipments.
  • Library
    The library has a collection of 1,00,000 volumes of books providing all the necessary information to students regarding their academics. The library also has a collection of journals, newspapers, magazines, reference books, dictionaries, thesaurus, encyclopedias etc. Other facilities including a reading room, internet facilities, drinking water facilities, reprographic facilities, lamination facilities, CCTV etc are also provided inside the library area. The library timings are 10 am- 5 pm on all working days and 10 am- 2.30 pm on Saturdays.

    The college campus has sports facilities for playing both outdoor and indoor games including football, basketball, carom, chess, table tennis etc. Students interested in playing sports have also participated in different activities and events at the institute.
  • Auditorium
    Maulana Azad College, Kolkata has an auditorium that can accommodate a good number of students at a time. The place is quite spacious and is equipped with modern audio-video facilities enabling students to learn new things from lectures that take place in the auditorium. The place is also used for college events such as meetings, workshops, conferences, etc.
