NIE Mysore - The National Institute of Engineering

The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), established in the year 1946, today stands 196th   place among top engineering colleges in the country that include IITs and NITs as per National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF-2021) announced by Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). It is ranked 13 among India’s top Engineering Colleges, as per survey conducted by India Today (July 2021). NIE is managed by a registered society and nine out of ten current directors are distinguished alumni of the institute.

NIE is a grant-in-aid institution and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. NIE got autonomous status from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi in 2007.  It has been accredited by NAAC. Four Undergraduate Programmes – Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Industrial & Production Engineering and one PG Programme – Structural Engineering have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi, under Tier-I.  It is one of the 14 colleges in Karnataka that has been recognized under MHRD-World Bank sponsored Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) in all the three phases. All the Departments of NIE are recognized as Research Centre under VTU and AICTE for QIP.  Currently, NIE offers 7 UG and 12 PG Programmes.  Faculty has been the main strength of NIE.  They impart their vast knowledge to the students by using conventional methods of teaching-learning process as well as contemporary ones.

To enrich research and consultancy activities, 14 Centres of Excellence have been set up in collaboration with Industries and Alumni.  These Centres provide opportunities for students to fine tune their skills to the expectation of industries and offer consultancy services.  Many funded research projects of Central and State Governments, VTU and overseas universities are presently being carried out at NIE.  Three patents have been granted to NIE recently.

The campus life at NIE is complemented by quality housing for boys and girls.  The sports and cultural activities at NIE have been a high point of campus life, NIE thus provides the right ambience for all round development of the students coupled with Academic rigor.

The National Institute of Engineering is located at Mananthavadi Road, Vidyaranyapura, Mysuru, Karnataka. NIE Mysore is located 1.9 km away from the Ashokapuram Railway Station and students can reach the institute within 5 minutes. The nearest bus depot is the Mysore City Bus Stand which is located 3.5 km away from NIE Mysore and students can reach the campus in about 10 minutes. The nearest airport from the NIE Mysore is the Mysuru Airport which is located 9.7 km away and students can reach the institute in about 16 minutes. Students can take a bus or a taxi to reach the  National Institute of Engineering, Mysore campus.

Candidates must have passed the second year Pre University or 10+2 or equivalent examinations held preceding the entrance test with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one of the following subjects :- Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Computer Science, Biology, Electronics and has secured not less than 45% aggregate marks (40% for SC/ST/OBC) in optional subjects with English as one of the language. 

Facilities

  • Boys Hostel
    The NIE boys' hostel provides students with all of the modern conveniences they need for a comfortable stay on campus. The hostel has a total area of 72,920 square feet with four floors and can accommodate 486 students. An open-air amphitheatre, a gym, WiFi, a common lobby, a room for watching TV, washing machines, and hot water geysers are some of the facilities available in the boys’ hostel. The hostel kitchen is well-equipped, and there is a multi-cuisine option with a daily menu. Snacks and fruits are available on alternate days.
  • Girls Hostel
    The institute has separate hostel facilities for girls. Yeshvika and Yuvika are the two girls hostels available on the campus. The hostels were built in 1984 and 2014 respectively and are well equipped to accommodate over 310 students - Yuvika has a capacity of 259 students and Yeshvika has a capacity of 52 students. The kitchen is designed to facilitate healthy living, with a centralised bio-fuel kitchen, separate dining halls for both hostels, and quality South Indian food.
  • Gym
    For the convenience of students, faculty, and their families, NIE has well-maintained hi-tech fitness centres on the campus premises.
  • Library
    The NIE Mysore library has a large collection of books in engineering and related subjects. There are around lakhs of books in the library's collection. Abstracts, dictionaries, yearbooks, textbooks, encyclopaedias, and other general books, including Kannada novels, are all available in the library. The library has implemented an open access system and maintains an online catalogue to meet the needs of students, faculty, and research scholars. The digital library (20 systems) has access to e-journals, e-books, NPTEL videos, and other educational materials. LIBSOFT Web-based library software is used to fully computerise the library.
  • Sports
    NIE Mysore encourages all-round student development by providing a variety of sports and fitness options. To assist students with their athletic development and sporting activities the college features well-equipped indoor and outdoor facilities. NIE offers a wide range of sports for students to participate in, including football, basketball, archery, yoga and taekwondo.
  • Cafeteria
    NIE Mysore facilities include a cafeteria for the students and staff members in the institute. The canteen serves a variety of foods to students and faculty while also maintaining hygiene and cleanliness.
  • Auditorium
    NIE Mysore facilities and infrastructure include spacious auditoriums on the campus. Various events like theatre workshops, State-level debate competitions, inter-collegiate cultural festivals, talks and seminars, quiz competitions, debate competitions tackling subjects of social relevance, discussions on topics such as philosophy, science and technology, and music competitions are all held in the auditorium.
  • Medical/Hospital
    NIE Mysore facilities and infrastructure includes a health centre to meet the medical requirements of the entire NIE family. During office hours, a female and a male doctor are available for consultation.
  • Wifi
    The entire campus is equipped with a Wi-Fi facility. Students and faculty members can access the internet through Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • IT Infrastructure
    NIE Mysore facilities include well-maintained IT infrastructure on the campus. A wireless computing network has been installed around campus, allowing academics, staff, and students to access the internet at any time.
  • Laboratories
    Each department at the institute has a number of laboratories that are well-equipped with the most up-to-date instruments and apparatus. Through hands-on instruction, the aim is to provide students with a conceptual and practical understanding of the subject.
