Given the history, the institute was established in Lahore in 1921 and then shifted to Chandigarh post-independence in 1953. The Punjab Engineering College campus covers an area of over 146 acres of land. PEC Chandigarh has contributed to the nation by producing some great personalities. With a family of more than 100 faculty members, PEC Chandigarh focuses on providing quality education with the aim of building a culture of excellence in teaching. In the NIRF Rankings of 2021, the college has been ranked 70th in the engineering category.
Punjab Engineering College is a grant-in-aid institution that became a deemed university in 2003 through the guidelines of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. PEC Chandigarh imparts education in UG, PG, and doctoral programmes in the disciplines of engineering, humanities, social science, management, and science. The institute also maintains cordial relations with more than 200 companies belonging to the different sectors in order to provide job and internship opportunities to the students. PEC Chandigarh facilitates scholarship schemes as well as waivers programmes to deserving students and provides other necessities such as hostels, wifi connectivity, mess services, cafeteria, medical units, banking facilities, etc.

The distance between the ISBT bus stand and PEC Chandigarh is only 8.9 kilometres and can be covered within half an hour by a four-wheeler.
