REC Chennai was established in 1997 with the support of Rajalakshmi Educational Trust. The college is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with ‘A’ Grade and approved by UGC. REC Chennai has been ranked 110 in the NIRF Ranking 2021 under the engineering category. The college provides ethical and competent professionals with programmes of excellence in Engineering, Technology and Management Education and Research. The mission of REC Chennai is to provide quality education and promote research and development in management and technology for the benefit of society. The institute offers undergraduate course in BE/B.Tech and postgraduate courses in ME/M.Tech and M.B.A. All the courses are offered by Anna University, Chennai and are recognised by AICTE.
REC Chennai constituted Centre for Sponsored Research & Consultancy (CSRC) to foster research activities and enhance industry-institute interaction. CSRC has collaborations with many industries like- Super Auto Forge, Valeo India Pvt. Ltd., Aban Biotech Limited, Tata Consultancy Services, Addison & Company Ltd. and many more. Rajalakshmi Engineering College has facilities like a library, canteen, hostel, internet, health care, security, etc. Workshops, seminars, conferences and placements are other activities conducted by the college. For placement, there is a separate placement cell. The college also has various societies and cells to promote all-round growth of the students.

Facilities
- Boys Hostel
Separate hostel for boys. The hostel can accommodate 500 boys. Single room accommodation is given to the final year and PG students. They are also permitted to use their own computers in their own rooms. The mess is spacious with a dining hall and kitchen. Separate seating arrangements are made for both boys and girls. Hostel Mess is run by the Management through a private contractor under the guidance of the Principal and Administrative officer. Vegetarian food is served in the hostel. Mess charges are collected on an annual basis at the time of admission. Parents and guests are allowed to consume food by paying for them. - Girls Hostel
Separate hostel for girls. The hostel can accommodate 200 girls. Single room accommodation is given to the final year and PG students. Various books, newspapers, magazines, periodicals, reference books, national and international journals in all branches of engineering, science, technology, management and general studies are provided to the students. - Sports
The College is committed to promoting sports activities towards the all-round growth of its students. The campus has 6000 sq.ft. indoor facilities for Chess, Carom, Table Tennis, Volley Ball and Badminton and out-Door facilities for Volley Ball, Foot Ball, Tennis, Ball Badminton. We have two qualified Physical Education staff to train the students. - Cafeteria
The canteen of REC is hygienic and it provides healthy food for the students and faculty. A separate mess for boys is also provided on the campus. - Medical/Hospital
A separate inpatient facility is provided for the students. The health centre provides quality health care in a comfortable environment. - IT Infrastructure
The college has a dedicated internet lab working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. college give free internet access to our students. We have 171 Mbps 1:1 dedicated leased line internet connectivity (155 Mbps from Reliance and 16 Mbps from Vodafone). The internet can be accessed from more than 1300 computers. college have started migrating from the proprietory software to Free and Open Source Software 5 years back and as a result, most of our computers are operated only on Open Source Technologies now. We are using free and open source software in replacement of commercial software wherever possible. We have installed proprietory software in a very few labs just to explore the technologies to the students and faculty. All the departments and the HODs have internet connectivity. We have also provided a free 24x7 Wi-Fi facility in the entire campus (including hostels, cafeteria, seminar halls, auditorium) for the benefit of the students and faculty to avail internet connection from anywhere in the campus. The campus intranet has important details about Test Schedules, Time Tables, Examination Schedules, Campus News etc., and a wealth of information about the college. - Transport
A transport department has been dedicated to the transport facility that is provided to the students and faculty of REC.
