Sanatana Dharma College was established in 1946 under the initiative of Sri K. Parthasarathy Iyengar and Sri V. Sundara Raja Naidu. It was an extension of the Sanatana Dharma Vidyasala established in 1905 by Rao Bahadur K. A. Krishna Iyengar and Dr S. Venkitarama Naidu under the auspices of the Alappuzha chapter of the Theosophical Society. The college premises were shifted to its present location in 1950. Sanatana Dharma Vidyasala, which manages the college, is a non-profit making institution that has made substantial contributions to the social, educational and cultural milieu of the otherwise backward district of Alappuzha situated in the south of Kerala. The Vidyasala provides educational facilities from kindergarten to doctoral research through institutions such as S.D.V. English Medium Higher Secondary School, affiliated to the C.B.S.E., S.D.V. High School For Boys, S.D.V. High School For Girls, S.D.V. Boy’s Higher Secondary School, and S.D. College. The college celebrated its diamond jubilee and other important milestones in a befitting manner. It also boasts of a long list of illustrious persons from all walks of life who are the alumni of the college. The college is affiliated to the University of Kerala and offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as research facilities through approved research centres in different disciples.
Girls Hostel The college has a hostel for girl students with a separate section for postgraduate students. The hostel has a mess room and basic recreational facilities. Around 100 students get accommodation in the hostel. A teacher in the college functions as the warden.
Gym The college has a multi-gymnasium on the campus.
Library The College Library is situated in the central area of the campus for easy access. The library is having spacious stack rooms and a reading area. The library is holding more than fifty thousand books including rare books and popular periodicals.
Sports The college has a physical education department with facilities for major sports and games like water sports, Power Lifting, Cricket, Basket Ball, Table Tennis, Shuttle Badminton, Kabaddi, and Athletics.
Cafeteria The College has a Canteen facility that has been provided on the campus with food at subsidized rates to students. Separate seating facilities are available in the canteen for the convenience of the students and staff. A committee consisting of staff and students supervise the functioning of the canteen.
Auditorium The College has Auditorium for facilitating co-curricular activities, three common auditoriums/seminar halls are available. The main auditorium can accommodate about 800 people. A fully air-conditioned audio-visual hall with a seating capacity of 75. Golden Jubilee Auditorium with the audio-visual facility in the main building with a seating capacity of 200.
Medical/Hospital The College has a First aid facility is available in the college itself, a well-established hospital, viz. Co-operative Hospital, Punnapra with inpatient, outpatient, emergency care facility, ambulance, etc. is available within 400 meters.
Wifi The College has WI-FI connectivity to all departments.
IT Infrastructure The college is equipped with ten NMIECT broad-band INTERNET connections to various departments. The college is having an IT center with PCs, scanners, and printers. A fire-optic LAN connects all departments, libraries, and other areas of the college. A communication lab is organized in the English Department. Statistical packages and other analytical software are being used in the Science and Social Science Departments. A library is having a separate IT area with 10 PCs and a high-speed INTERNET connection. NLIST e-journals, ebooks, and databases are being subscribed to by the college.
Laboratories The College science departments are equipped with advanced laboratory facilities. They stock the latest state-of-the-art equipment that is used by the students to conduct experiments in their respective areas. Botany - Botany has an undergraduate, a postgraduate, and a research laboratory. The department specializes in tissue culture and has a specialized lab for the purpose of research in that area. Chemistry - The department has an undergraduate and a postgraduate laboratory. The department specializes in polymer chemistry and its lab is specially fitted for research in that area. Physics - The department has an undergraduate and a postgraduate laboratory. The department specializes in electronics and computer science and its lab is specially fitted for research in that area. The department also has an undergraduate lab for optical instrumentation. Zoology - The department has an undergraduate and a postgraduate laboratory. The department specializes in biotechnology and its lab has special facilities for research in that area. The department also has a museum and an advanced biotechnology lab.
Convenience Store The College Cooperative Store provides books, reprographic facilities, and other stationery items at subsidized rates.
Parking Facility The College has sufficient parking space for two-wheelers and four-wheelers are provided near the entrance of the college.
