SLC was founded in 1964 by the great visionary and entrepreneur Padmashree (late) Shri Shyam Lal Gupta. Over the past decade, Shyam Lal College has made steady progress towards achieving academic excellence through their curriculum. SLC is a vibrant centre of academic excellence and provides quality education to students all over India, especially to those belonging from economically and educationally deprived communities, especially girls.The College campus has a large sports field, surrounded by lush green lawns and blooming gardens, providing a perfect environment for holistic teaching and learning. SLC has grown into a leading higher education institute of learning, creativity, and information building over the last 56 years, with NIRF rankings of 69th (2020), 41st (2019), and 61st (2018) for Colleges of India. Shyam Lal College has also been selected for the DBT STAR College Programme under the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2020.
Shyam Lal College has established itself as a leading educational institution of the Country and the Hon'ble Vice-President of India, Shri Venkaiah Naidu, graced his presence on the Annual Day and Prize Distribution function for the 2018-19 academic year.
Shyam Lal College is also a participating institute in the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA2.0), the flagship initiative of the Ministry of Education, Government Of India. SLC has adopted five villages to promote rural development through institutional linkages as part of this project, namely: Dhitora (Baghpat), Nithora (Ghaziabad), Chirodi (Ghaziabad), Jawli (Ghaziabad), and Kotwalpur (Ghaziabad).

Shyam Lal College is situated on GT Road in Dwarkapuri, Shahdara, New Delhi. Welcome and Shahdara Metro Stations, both on the Rithala-Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) Metro route through Kashmiri Gate, are within walking distance of the College and provide the most convenient mode of transportation from various parts of the city and neighboring towns of the NCR. Furthermore, the College is well-connected to various parts of the city through road and bus services. The famous Grand Trunk Road (G.T. Road) runs right next to the College and connects it to other towns in Uttar Pradesh, including Sahibabad and Ghaziabad.
