Smt. Kapila Khandvala College of Education, Mumbai was established in 1970. As Sadhana School of Educational Research and Training managed under Sadhana Education Society. In 1970, the college was renamed as The Sadhana School of Education. The College was once again renamed to Smt. Kapila Khandvala College of Education in 1972. This was done to honor and commemorate the memory of Smt. Kapila Khandvala, a pivotal personality and the guiding spirit who generated growth and expansion in all its permissible magnitude. The College is affiliated to the University of Mumbai. The College conducts courses leading to the B. Ed. and Ph.D. The College is also University of Mumbai centre for M. A in Education. The College is also Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) centre for M. Phil. The College is a Gujarati Linguistic Minority College. The College has recognition from NCTE {National Council of Teacher Education). The University of Mumbai has placed the college in category 'A' which means academically and administratively sound institution. The College has been accredited with 'A' Grade by NAAC. The institution is a pioneer in many upcoming areas in the filed of education and has taken up a number of projects in the areas of Development Education, Use of ICT in education and e-learning. The Institution was established in the 60’s by eminent educationists and social workers who joined hands to set up an educational society under the name of’ Sadhana Education Society. In June 1962, this College of Education was established and came to be known as the ‘Sadhana School of Educational Research and Training’. In 1977 it was renamed as ‘Smt. Kapila Khandvala Institution of Education’ to honor and commemorate the memory of Smt. Kapilaben Khandvala, an eminent personality in the field of Education. The College is a recognized Gujarati linguistic minority institution. “It is better to light a candle than to curse darkness” was the motto of the founders Shri Vishnuprasad Desai, the then Mayor of Bombay, Shri C. M. Trivedi, Smt. Kapila Khandvala and Dr. Madhuri Shah, whose sincerity of purpose in the face of odds did not deter them from working towards the cause of education.

Recently, the alumni members who participated in this project had a reunion in college with the pioneer of the idea – Mr. Greig Whitehead.
Candidates with at least 50% marks either in the Bachelor Degree (a three-year program) in B.A, B.Sc or 50% (49.50-49.99%) in post-graduation and for the reserved category (ST, SC, OBC, VJNT 1,2,3) 45% (44.50-44.99%) will be eligible. For B.Com, Management, Engineering, Computer Science, Technology, Agriculture, BBI, Pharmacy, Law, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Music, Dance, Drama with 55% marks at graduation or post-graduation will be eligible for open category and for reserved category

The library is the soul of the college, buzzing with activity throughout the day with teaching students and researchers seeking specialized knowledge. The library is spacious and well-equipped with books, periodicals, newspapers, and exhaustive CD-ROM collection. It is enriched periodically with the addition of the latest publications in the field of education and allied subjects. The Librarian acts as a resource person to our trainees and readily renders information without imposing a sense of obligation. The college is the first to initiate professional interaction of Librarians through the organization of Seminars and Workshops. We have a well equipped digitized library with Digital Repository in D-Space Software, Digitization of old Thesis and Dissertation, subscribed E-journals, E-Books through N-List, INFLIBNET, Library services through Moodle, a Library Blog and a Library Website. The KK library extends its service not only to our students but to the educational fraternity such as alumni, retired teachers, in-service teachers principals, researchers and faculty from other institutions.

Medical/Hospital The College have a Basic First Respondent Training program is conducted for all students by the Disaster Management Cell, BMC, where the students are given hands-on training in administering First-Aid. This equips the students in handling medical emergencies in their teaching careers.
Wifi The college has a Wi-Fi facility for the students and staff. Wifi enabled campus.
IT Infrastructure The College has an excellent computer laboratory with a LAN System & Internet connection. The institution has also installed Moodle a learning management system that encourages students to learn independently. Training in CAI’s, Geogebra, NetLogo and Google earth is a key feature in the training inputs for students for ICT. The focus is on ensuring that the students use ICT effectively in their teaching career.
