Sree Narayana College for Women, Kollam, is one of the most prestigious colleges, catering to the educational needs of young women in Kerala. The visionaries of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, led by Sri. R. Sankar, realizing the vitality of women's education in the socio economic upliftment of the society, established this great centre of knowledge in September 1951. The college stands out as a proud and triumphant symbol of a progressive society, ushered by the ideals, vision and social philosophy of Sree Narayana Guru. The institution believes in achieving the high ideals of Sree Narayana Guru that is, Sree Narayana Dharma, which stands for 'Enlightenment through Education' or 'Vidya kondu Prabhudharakuka' in our mother tongue Malayalam and views education as an instrument of socio economic progress.
          The college had a modest beginning with a few courses at the intermediate and undergraduate levels. More courses were introduced in due time and was later elevated to the status of a Postgraduate institution in 1964, with the introduction of M.Sc. course in Home Science. The departments of Chemistry, Physics and English followed their footsteps and started post graduate courses in the later years. In 2020, an innovative Master's programme in Behavioural Economics and Data Science has been sanctioned to the Department of Economics, thereby taking the number of Post graduate departments to five. The Department of Chemistry became a Research Department in 2008 and at present 5 Research Scholars work under three Research Guides. Over the years, 5 PhD degrees in Chemistry have been produced from the research department. The Department of Physics joined the realms of a research centre in the year 2017, and at present two research guides are guiding four research scholars. Three PhDs have been produced from the centre so far. Now the college is one of the leading centres of learning in the field of higher education in Kerala with 16 teaching departments offering various courses at the Degree and Post-graduate levels for over 2500 students. This prestigious institution has a great tradition of producing meritorious students from its very inception. All through these years, the teaching community and the student community of the college have contributed the brick and tool towards the process of moulding a progressive intelligentsia, free from caste and communal prejudices and social taboos.

A Pass in Higher Secondary Examination of the State or an Examination accepted by the University as equivalent thereto provided candidates coming from NonCommerce group should have at least 45% of the aggregate marks.

Facilities

  • Girls Hostel
    The College hostel was established by the management on November 7th, 2010 for the purpose of accommodating students coming from other districts and states. The Principal of the college is the warden of the hostel and has the authority of deciding the inmates. A deputy warden is appointed from among the faculty and a matron appointed by the management stays in the hostel. The hostel has 12 rooms including a dormitory and a total of 52 students can be accommodated. The hostel also has a mess hall, kitchen, storeroom, cook's room, office room, and sick room. The students are in charge of deciding the menu for their breakfast, lunch, tea, and dinner. A watchman is appointed for taking care of safety concerns. The students' movement is monitored with the help of a register and if they have to go outside the campus for any purpose they have to take prior permission of the warden.

    The college has a well-equipped fitness centre which is maintained by the Department of Physical Education. Students and faculty avail of the facilities of the fitness centre. Equipment in the fitness centre includes Treadmills, Gym cycle, Orbetrech, Multi Machines for different muscle training, Squat machine, Bench press machine, Medicine balls, Dumbbells etc. There is also specialized equipment for Weight lifting and Powerlifting which includes weights, barbells and a rubberized platform. 25 members can be accommodated at a time in the centre. The students have two sessions for training ? morning from 6 am to 8 am and in the evening from 4 pm to 6.30 pm. The centre also provides strength training sessions to many students who have represented our college at the state, national and international levels.

    The Sree Narayana College for women, Kollam was founded by the great statesman and leader Sri.R.Sankar in 1951, who was inspired by the idea 'Enlightenment through Education' of the great Karmayogi, Sree Narayana Guru. The college library also began functioning in the same year. The first book entered in the stock register was “Historical Atlas of India" on 09/07/1951.Library Infrastructure: The college library is functioning in a two-storied building with a total area of 4000 sq ft. There is a seating capacity of 100 seats. The college library is a centralized and fully automated library. The total collection of the library includes 59658 books, 2130 Reference Books, 50 journals, 65 popular magazines, 13 newspapers, and a collection of CDs and DVDs. There are about 32314 titles in the library. The library software we are using is LIBSOFT. This college has 15 teaching departments offering various courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The members of this library are 2500 students, 93 teachers, and 33 nonteaching staff.
  • Sports
    The college has an outdoor basketball court which has been constructed by keeping in mind the regulations for conducting tournaments. The playing surface is concrete, colored red with acrylic paint and the ring boards are made of fiber. The court dries quickly after rain and the surface can be easily cleaned without much effort. This helps in resuming the games without wasting time. The court is also used as Badminton courts which are four in number and the college Roll Ball team has their practice sessions in the court. The court is also be used by the Volleyball team. The poles, nets, and goal posts needed for each of the above games are maintained by the Department of Physical Education.
  • Cafeteria
    The college canteen is the most popular hangout on the campus where the students come in groups for refreshment as well as for their discussions about whatnot. The canteen provides lip-smacking delicacies for breakfast, lunch, and tea at reasonable rates to faculty and subsidized rates to students. The canteen uses the organic vegetables and fruits from our organic garden for preparing meals. With the contributions from the Former Students Association and the Retired Teachers Association, the canteen provides free meals to needy students on all working days.
  • Auditorium
    The Auditorium at Sree Narayana College for Women, Kollam is definitely the most visited place by students, teachers, and non-teaching staff, as most of the recreational activities and celebrations are held here. It is equipped with the most modern audio-visual facilities and a very effective light and sound system. The building has a seating capacity of approximately 500 students. All the major functions of the college like Arts Day, Union Inauguration, Induction programs, Merit Day, Intercollegiate competitions, Exhibitions, Film Screening, etc are conducted in the auditorium. Many students have identified their hidden talents on the majestic stage of SNCW and have become great artists and performers thereafter.
