St. John’s College is one of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Colleges established and administered by the Major Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram in accordance with the rights of the minority community guaranteed in the constitution of our country. This esteemed centre of learning is the fruit of the vision and farsightedness of late Archbishop Most Rev.Benedict Mar Gregorios and currently flourishing under the patronage of His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos. Ever since its inception, the College is championing the cause of learning and total development of the region.
St. John’s, affiliated to the University of Kerala was started in 1964 with Pre-Degree course and upgraded successively with B.A. Political Sciences and Malayalam, B.Sc. Mathematics, Zoology and Botany and B.Com. Degree courses in 1967, M.Sc. Mathematics in 1995, B.A. Communicative English in 1998, M.A. Public Administration in 1999 and M.Sc. Environmental Sciences in 2001, M.Sc. Chemistry in 2013 and B.A. Economics in 2014.
While being conscious of its special obligations for providing educational opportunities to the Malankara Syrian Catholic Community, the management of the college extends its service to the members of other communities also. In 2015, the College was re-accredited with ‘A’ grade by NAAC after assessment by its peer team which visited the college from 26th to 28th of March, 2015.
The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of science and Technology has recognized St.John’s College under its Star College Scheme in 2016. It is another golden feather that adorns the crown of St.John’s immediately after its NAAC ‘A’ grade re-accreditation. Ministry of science and Technology has recognized St.John’s College under its DST-FIST program in 2016. It is yet another golden feather that adorns the crown of St.John’s immediately after its NAAC ‘A’ grade re-accreditation and Star College recognition.
A person, who has passed Higher Secondary/Intermediate (10+2) any other examination recognized as equivalent there to, shall be eligible for the course.
Gym The college has a Gym facility for the students.
Library The Library is situated at the heart of the College. It has an area of 8000 Sq.feet. A reading space of 2000 Sq.feet is arranged on two floors. It has a spacious circulation counter and a well-furnished reading space. Teak wood cupboards, wood, and iron racks are used for keeping books. The carpet area of the Stack Room is 3000 Sq.feet. The Library has been upgraded as a first-grade library in 1982. At its initial stage, the Library totally depended upon the Management for funds for the procurement of books and other developments. Later the Government began to extend financial support. The Library receives UGC grants also.
Sports The college has sports facilities for all students.
Cafeteria The College has a spacious and well-furnished canteen. About 150 persons can dine at a time. It has separate sessions for the staff, women, and boys. The Canteen starts functioning in the morning at 8 o'clock in the morning and remains open till 6:30 pm. Food is being served to students at a concessional rate. There are arrangements to supply snacks, cool drinks, ice creams at reasonable rates. The surroundings of the Canteen are kept neat and tidy giving special attention to hygiene and cleanliness.
Auditorium The college has an auditorium facility for events and seminars.
Medical/Hospital The college has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with St. Joseph’s Hospital, Anchal to provide medical assistance to the students and staff for any emergency occurring within the campus.
Wifi The college has a Wi-Fi facility for the students and staff.
IT Infrastructure The college has an excellent IT Infrastructure facility for the students.
Laboratories The college has Laboratory for Systematics and Conservation, Botany and Zoology department museums, aquariums, Bio Park, etc.
Parking Facility The college has a separate parking facility for the students and staff.
