St Peter's College

The College is named after St. Peter, the apostle of peace and harmony. St. Peter’s College is located at Kolenchery, approximately 30 kilometres east of Kochi. Kolenchery was once a remote village with educationally backward inhabitants. The College proved itself to be a boon to the rustic inhabitants of the locality. Besides producing thousands of graduates and post graduates, uplifting the educationally backward people, the College has been instrumental in ushering in a new look to Kolenchery with many business establishments, banks, government offices and even a Medical College and made it a beautiful township. The well-wishers of the College believe that the phenomenal growth of this institution is due to the boundless blessings of our Patrons Saints, St. Peter and St. Paul.Ever since its inception in 1964, the College management and the staff, through their consistent and untiring efforts, have produced citizens who excelled themselves as administrators, executives, clergymen, businessmen, doctors, engineers, lawyers and a host of other professionals. The College is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and is accredited with A Grade (CGPA 3.25) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of the UGC.

The College started functioning in July 1964 with five Pre-degree batches. It earned a good reputation in a short span of time and its fame spread all over Kerala and produced international sports persons and academicians. The College was upgraded as a degree college in 1967 in recognition of its outstanding performance in higher education with the commencement of eight undergraduate programmes. 1982 was a turning point to the College with the beginning of M.Sc. course in Botany. It now offers Degree courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics, History, Political Science, Malayalam, English, Hindi Commerce and BLISc course in the aided stream besides Commerce (Taxation and Computer Application) in unaided stream. Post Graduate courses offered in the College are Botany, Mathematics, Commerce, English and Bio-technology in the aided stream and Tourism Administration in the unaided stream. The Post Graduate Departments of Botany, Commerce and Mathematics are approved research centres affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University and altogether 36 scholars are doing research in these centres. At present it has a student strength of 1560. There are 93 members on the Teaching Staff and 32 members on the Non- Teaching staff.

The history of the College for the last 50 years gives the story of steady growth in every sense. As Swamy Vivekananda once said, “Great things can be done by great sacrifices only”. Dedicated services and sincere efforts of many good people of Kolenchery are there behind the growth of this institution. St. Peter’s College started its career with a bang. It is still remaining as a beacon, shedding the light of knowledge with wide repercussion.
