Established in 1936, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences was known as Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai). TISS Mumbai is deemed to be a university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai is host to twelve schools namely School of Social Work, School of Development Studies, School of Management and Labour Studies, School of Health Systems Studies, School for Media and Cultural Studies, School of law, Rights and Constitutional Governance. TISS Mumbai has six independent centres: Centre for Education Innovation and Action Research, Centre for Excellence on Adolescents and Youth, Centre for Lifelong Learning, Centre for Studies in Sociology of Education, Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies and Centre for Library and Information Management & SDTM Library. Tata Institute of Social Sciences is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of ‘A’ and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). In NIRF 2021 Ranking, TISS Mumbai has been ranked 70th in the overall category. Considering various graduation outcomes, teaching, learning, and resources, perception, outreach and inclusivity, research and professional practice, the varsity has been ranked 37 in the NIRF 2021 ranking in the university category.

For MA/ M.Sc. in Urban Policy & Governance, Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Architecture/ Engineering/ Management/ Geography, Physical Science/ Planning/ Law or Social Science from a recognized University. They must have completed their internship on or before 8 June 2021.
For MA,M.Sc., and M.L.Sc. programs, candidates must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree or its equivalent from a recognized University. The bridge course pattern should be 10+3+3 / 10
Boys Hostel TISS Mumbai offers accommodation facilities to the students. For this, the institute has a separate hostel for boys. In total, the institution has six hostels that can accommodate 500 people. Students who have taken admission in postgraduate, M.Phil and Ph.D. courses can avail TISS Mumbai hostel facilities.
Girls Hostel The institute has separate hostels for girls. Students must note that they will be offered admission to hostel depending on the availability of seats, not every student admitted to PG, M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes can avail TISS Mumbai hostel facilities. Students must pay the hostel fees at the time of admission to the Central Bank of India, Deonar Branch, which is situated right next to the TISS main campus.
Gym TISS Mumbai has a gymkhana located on the main campus and a well-equipped gym with modern equipment and facilities and has space for yoga. TISS Mumbai gym is equipped with three electronic and one manual treadmill, two cycles, dumbbells and plates, leg extension & leg curl machine, low pulley & high rows pulley, chest press machine and pack deck. The gym is open on all working days (Monday to Saturday).
Library The Institute has a library with a vast collection of books, reference books, journals, periodicals etc. TISS Mumbai library fulfils the information and research requirements of students and faculty members.
Sports The institute has a basketball court, tennis court, playground for cricket & football and indoor sports facilities. Every year various sports tournaments are conducted.
