The Government of Tamil Nadu established the university in the year 2002. Since its inception, the university has developed a number of departments - Department of Economics, Zoology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Tamil and English. It provides both undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs under it. The university is affiliated with the University Grants Commissions (UGC). It is accredited with Grade 'B' by NAAC.

Thiruvalluvar University Central Library is an area of 10526 Sq.feet. The Seating capacity is about 150 and It has collection of text and reference books, journals, M.Phil. Dissertations and Ph.D Theses on various disciplines. Library has various sections such as Reference Section, Textbook Section, Theses/ Dissertations and E-resources section, Library caters to information needs of Students, Research Scholars and Staff Members of our university and affiliated colleges. Computers and Internet connectivity is there to access e-resources to the full fill the requirements of the Students, Research Scholars and Faculty Members of our university and affiliated colleges.
